Rehabilitating the Bite
From Pain to Confidence: A Life changing TMJ and Smile Transformation
This patient came to us with a range of concerns, difficulty sleeping, jaw discomfort, restricted breathing, migraines and tinnitus. In this video, she shares her transformative journey, from her initial New Patient exam to the attentive care she received from our team.
After a thorough diagnosis, we identified issues with her jaw alignment and bite. She began treatment with a custom TMJ orthotic, which quickly brought significant relief. With her jaw in a more comfortable forward, and relaxed position, her symptoms began to fade. She felt like herself again, energized, pain- free and able to enjoy her life, friends and travel.
For a long- term stability, she underwent functional rehabilitation through full- mouth crowns. While cosmetic in appearance- giving her a fuller, whiter smile, the restoration was fundamentally functional. Her bite was rebuilt based on the optimal jaw position established by the orthotic phase.
Today, she describes herself as a completely different person. Her face is more relaxed, she sleeps soundly, and the chronic pain is gone. The foundation of her transformation was a personalized, symptom-based approach that prioritized comfort and function—resulting in a smile that’s not only beautiful, but life changing.
“You Are Worth It”- A Journey to Healing, Confidence , and a New Life
She has been a long -time patient of ours for over a decade. Initially, she came to us with general dentistry needs. But her journey with us took a deeper turn after a life-changing moment at a Christian rock concert. During the concert, she felt an unexpected calling – a message that deeply resonated with her: “You deserve to have a better life. You deserve all the happiness.”
Moved by those words, she searched online for help with the chronic jaw pain she had been slightly enduring, and that’s how she found TMJ Plus. That moment marked the beginning of her transformation.
She entered our office with broken, worn-down teeth from years of clenching, grinding, and undiagnosed sleep and breathing issues. She also suffered from headaches and jaw discomfort. Through our detailed diagnostic process, we discovered that her bite had collapsed, contributing to both her pain and facial imbalance.
We began her treatment with a TMJ orthotic--- a custom device that not only relieved her pain but helped restore facial symmetry and proper posture. This orthotic became the foundation for the next steps: rebuilding her bite and restoring function with full-mouth crowns.
Her case is a powerful example of how cosmetic dentistry is not just about aesthetics; it’s about restoring function and health. The worn-down teeth weren’t just a cosmetic issue; they were the result of the underlying functional problems that needed to be addressed first. Once we stabilized her joints and muscles with the orthotic and introduced a sleep device to address airway issues, we were able to safely and effectively restore her smile.
The results have been nothing short of life changing. Her new smile doesn’t just look beautiful – it reflects how she feels: vibrant, confident, and pain-free. In her own words, she’s now living her next chapter: she’s dancing, skydiving, dating, and finally focusing on herself.
She often says she looks and feels like a completely different person, like years have been lifted off her life. And perhaps, most importantly, she now embraces the belief that “I am worth it”.
The patient’s story is a testament to the power of comprehensive, integrative dental care. It’s about transforming lives.
Meet Mr. Mark – A Journey from Sleep Apnea to “Mr. Smiley”
Mr. Mark has been a trusted patient of ours for over 15 years. His story is one of transformation, physically, emotionally, and in his quality of life.
For years, Mark struggled with sleep apnea, chronic snoring, and the discomfort of a CPAP machine he couldn’t tolerate due to claustrophobia. He had used a sleep apnea mouth device to help bring his jaw forward at night, which gave some relief, but it wasn’t enough. His sleep issues were affecting not just his energy and alertness, but also his heart, health and relationship with his wife, who was deeply affected by his snoring.
Overtime, the constant clenching, acid reflux, and wear from sleep apnea began to break down his teeth---crowns were failing, and his bite as collapsing. That’s when we planned together.
We started by placing him in a custom orthotic to stabilize his bite and give his jaw support, not just at night, but during the day. Almost immediately, Mark noticed a difference, not just in jaw pain relief, but also in his posture and breathing. With the orthotic opening his airway and supporting his muscles, he could finally begin to heal.
From there, we moved forward with full mouth rehabilitation, building up his teeth with crowns to not only restore function, but also improve his smile. His transformation wasn’t about cosmetics, but about solving the root cause, his airway health. The result being a wider brighter smile, improved breathing, and better quality of sleep, without pain.
Today, Mark is pain-free, sleeping better, and living his best retired life. Cruises, time with his loved ones, and joy are part of his every day. His wife is thrilled, and his friends know him as “Mr. Smiley”.
This is more than just a smile makeover, it’s a life makeover. And it all started by treating the airway, not just the symptoms.
